If your desire is to be broke, then take financial advice from broke people. If you want to achieve wealth then you might need to change your inner-circle and learn to achieve wealth. It's funny in life how your friends knowledge shifts with each new challenge you face. Go through a divorce and all your friends become attorneys. Get cancer all of a sudden they have completed medical school. Want to make money, they appear to have received their MBA's in finance.
